What are suspension shock absorbers?

Shock absorbers are different when compared to suspension springs. Suspension springs allow the wheels to move up and down while keeping the passenger floor level, while shock absorbers lessen the amount of spring action once you’ve already passed a bump or pothole. This returns the vehicle to its original position on the road.

How to check shock absorbers:

A vehicle’s shock absorbers are in constant use while you drive, meaning they suffer from wear and tear more than other components under the hood. Here’s how you can make sure they’re in proper working condition:

  • Observe your car from the front. If it’s on a flat surface, it should be perfectly level and aligned with the ground. This will mean that both sides are the same distance from the floor. If you know the exact specifications of your suspension system, you can actually measure the height to see that it meets the minimum distance.
  • Push down on the front of your vehicle. While this isn’t exactly technical, doing it often will give you a feel for your car’s suspension. After you’ve pushed down on a surface that won’t bend or dent, the car should bounce back up and return to its position immediately.
  • Carefully inspect the struts or shock absorbers. If you find any signs of liquid that is or has been running down the shock absorber, it means it’s time for a professional inspection and possible suspension repairs.
